Spa is a given if it's going to be FIA-based. Le Mans, probably not.

So there's a sequel planned for Race Pro? If that's the case they REALLY need to fix the frame rate and I'll be a happy bunny. As the original made my eyes bleed.

Haha that's brilliant with the pitboards, never even noticed that. :)

Also RP2 sounds very good indeed, I wonder who will be the publisher though and hopefully they'll give them a lot more support this time round.

PS3 deserves it more imo due to the phenomenal wheel support. I'd like to see the 360 get it too though.

Tell you what though, if it does end up being a ps3 exclusive, I would trade in my xbox for a ps3 in a heartbeat.
...or maybe just buy a ps3 and deal with the wrath of the wife for having two systems.

Better yet... trade the wife in for a PS3.

This would be perfect for a tie-in with the FIA GT1 World Championship game that was being talked about recently.

That's the first thing I thought of when they announced the FIA GT game, being made by an "unnamed, yet experienced developer".

That's absolutely fantastic. I'm just hoping this go-around Race Pro 2 doesn't feel quite as watered-down from the PC version. Just a good push for some high-res textures, better anti-aliasing, etc. The sound and physics and flag-rules are all already superior.

Anyone heard any news at all regarding GTR 3?

I had some email communication with the SimBin community manager (he didn't divulge much information) but have heard nothing since April. Is it still due to be released on the consoles?

Cheers.

I very much doubt GTR 3 will be on any videogame console & I doubt we'll see SimBin release future games on anything other than PC and they'll be distributed via Steam and the RaceRoom.net online store.

The reasons are out in public: VirtualR.net has two stories posted, one from an Expressen article stating that a former board member and investor "Peter Wallenberg pulled out of the company following licensing issues and unsuccessful business ventures such as the expansion to the Xbox 360 gaming platform".

Race Pro shipped approximately 130,000 units for the 360 and suffered from quite a number of bugs and glitches & poor online code which effectively killed sales after week one. The aformentioned "licencing issues" could mean EA/Slightly Mad Studios have sole rights to the FIA GT1 & GT3 series - something that was rumoured to be a major part of GTR 3 given the car roster in GTR and GTR 2.

The same article quotes a response from Simbin CEO Henrik Roos via his interview with Realtid.se. From said article: "Roos clarifies that even though Simbin suffered from the economic crisis as have most companies, the company’s financial situation is not as bad as reported earlier.

Despite dropping sales from 66.5 million kronor (6.5 million Euros) in 2008 to 24 million (2.4 million Euros) in 2009, the company has gone through reorganisation and has secured more than four million Euros of new capital for future business."

I have been told very recently by someone with connections to fomer SimBin staff that there are no Xbox 360 or PS3 developers at SimBin and all of the original SimBin development team (that is, the ones who didn't leave when Blimey! Games became Slightly Mad Studios) are also gone, leaving a very small development team to finalise both the RaceRoom.net website/free "RaceRoom the game" and GTR 3 (and perhaps STCC 2).

This news sucks as I really enjoyed Race Pro, despite its many shortcomings, and I was hoping for another SimBin console release.

Cheers.

That's terrible news. I was honestly really surprised that SMS got the FIA GT license, I thought for sure it would go to Simbing exclusively for GTR3. I still love RP and have been looking forward to any news regarding the new one.

As you know TP, the emails have been tight lipped about the new game.

It really wouldn't surprise me to see this end up a small PC release after all. That's a crying shame.

All of our hopes now lay with SMS. Hope they deliver on their big sim talk.

I emailed the SimBin community manager as soon as I read both stories posted on VirtualR and was told the Expressen article was an exaggeration but I'm not so sure.

From what I understand, SimBin are making GTR 3 without a publisher (one reason why RaceRoom.net will have an online store), the result of which is a small budget and with their financial strife along with licence issues, I can't see it matching anything from Slightly Mad who are flushed with cash and have the might of EA to back them up. We are yet to see anything of GTR 3 - not a single screenshot or gameplay video has been released while many of the features found in GTR 2 and missing from subsequent SimBin games, such as night racing, are making their way into Shift 2 and we have plenty of media to look at.

The situation SimBin finds itself in reminds me a little of SBK & WRC developer Milestone. SBK 2001, published by EA, is still the best SBK game by a long way, no doubt because of the EA money Milestone had to polish and hone the product. Everything since SBK 2001 has been fair to good but never great, with recent games still lacking features such as real time commentary and track and corner guides with commentaries on specific corners.

SimBin has been through many publishers in recent years (I count 5) and the debacle that was Race Pro due to it being a buggy mess & the lack of updates and community interaction after its release has hurt their once stellar reputation. I too was looking forward to a more polished and better looking Race Pro 2, it appears that the PC will be only place to find future SimBin games.

Cheers.

Oh man TP, don't even get me started on Milestone and their publishing woes. I think they've tried just as many as Simbin. All with less than stellar success. We're finally getting SBK X here in the states this week, right after SBK 11 is announced for spring release in EU. No real shock, I'm happy it's here at all. WRC will not make it here, mark my words. And still with the region lock, which only leads to more people dropping off since the online community is so small and separated.
And then there's the whole Monumental cleaning house issue too, but we'll take that to PMs, since we're probably the only two that care on here.

This whole thing about GTR3 really makes me sad. It's a drag that Bandai/Namco bought out that portion of Atari, I thought they really had good publisher backing for a while, and a nice easy means to get their games out internationally. When the shakedown happened, all support came to a crashing halt, DLC, patches, everything. That's what the final nail in the coffin was. Well, honestly, by that time it was too late anyway, the bulk of the masses dropped out.

So, if they're going no publisher, and even if they would make it for console with the little staff they have, there's no way it would get out of EU period. But yeah, you're right, all signs pointing to small PC only D/L release like the rest of their recent games. It's too bad really, if they had the cash flow like some of the "big boys", they'd give PD and Turn 10 all the competition they could handle on console, guaranteed.

it really is too bad that they aren't getting the funding they need, because race pro is actually pretty good and, with the proper funding, I'm sure that a console simbin game could take the fight to the factory efforts of PD and turn 10, better than SHIFT 2, I'd bet.

It is a huge blow to SimBin fans Jamesways, no doubt about it.

I won't regurgitate my PM here but I will say that SimBin didn't help themselves with Race Pro. While you, Porsche 914/16 and I all enjoyed RP, it was a buggy mess on release with a shoddy online mode and all sorts of graphical issues. Combine the horrible release issues with a complete lack of communication from SimBin and Atari regarding patches and the backlash from those who rightly pointed out the game needed patching before DLC content (some of which is buggy too) and the game was dead & buried, then dug up and burnt for good measure.

With more attention to detail and a lot of polish, Race Pro could have well been THE racing simulator for consoles. As it stands RP is a fantastic physics engine held back by many issues. I'm starting to think very little development and QA was carried out between THQ canning "GTR" and Atari picking up development of "Race Pro", given SimBin's financial woes.

Cheers.

I loved the hell out of Race Pro. It's just a shame that the visual aspect of it literally gave me headaches. It made me physically pained/ill if I played it for even as short a time as half an hour.

SimBin are hiring people...

YouTube - ‪We are hiring !‬‏

If you watch closely, you may just see some hints about upcoming games...Perhaps it's time for Jamesways to reconnect with Mikkel to ask about painting cars too.

News about GTR 3 should be released some time during December. Some posts from SimBin staff on the RaceRoom forum indicate this, now VirtualR have picked up the story as well.

First GTR3 News Coming Later This Month! — VirtualR – Sim Racing News

I cannot wait to see what SimBin have been working on. C.A.R.S. in alpha form has been a lot of fun & SMS are really showing gamers what the future of sim racing could be, I hope SimBin are able to produce a stellar game after such a long wait.
